Physical activity means moving your body and efficiently using more energy. Routine physical activity tremendously benefits your physical, mental and social health. It is the best cost-efficient medicine for people of all ages. Everyone can perform physical activities based on their capabilities. It can effectively prevent and improve chronic health issues like heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cancers and depression.

How to start physical activity?

If exercising is new to you, there are simple guidelines you could follow to help you gradually progress in your fitness journey safely.

  • Doing at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity exercises or 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity is recommended.

  • Children and adolescents should have at least 60 minutes or more of physical activity or exercise daily. Sports are naturally the best to keep children engaged in physical activity and enjoy.

What if I have existing medical conditions or disabilities?

Physical activity is for everybody. In most cases, you should still consider doing some form of physical activity to help you stay active and healthy. Consult your physiotherapist or medical doctor to assess if you are healthy enough to start a new exercise routine.

For people with disabilities, there are forms of recreational activities and exercises you could do to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Everyone can enjoy the benefits of exercise.

Different game activities such as hockey and soccer can be modified to allow everyone to experience the benefit of exercise. There are also opportunities to get involved in adaptive sports for people with physical limitations.

The role of physiotherapists in physical activity

Physiotherapists are movement and exercise experts. They have extensive knowledge of medical conditions and activity limitations to create comprehensive physical activity plans for people with existing medical conditions or physical limitations.

Through physiotherapy, people can overcome injuries and live a healthier and more active life. Your physiotherapist will start assessing your condition and screen for possible causes of your pain or injury and use this to create a treatment plan based on your goals and activity level.
